Ochy Partners with Volumental to Bring Foot Shape and Running Form Together

Finding the right running shoe is about more than knowing a runner’s foot size. It is also about understanding how their body moves.

That is why Ochy and Volumental are bringing foot shape and running form together in a single retail fitting experience, giving stores a more complete picture of every runner and helping them deliver one clear shoe recommendation.

The integration is now live across Runners Need stores in the United Kingdom, combining Volumental’s 3D foot-scanning technology with Ochy’s AI-powered gait analysis in one seamless in-store journey.

A more complete fitting experience at Runners Need

Exceptional service and expert advice have long been central to the Runners Need experience.

By bringing Volumental and Ochy together, Runners Need can now combine detailed information about a customer’s foot shape with insights into how they move while running.

Andy Dopson, Retail Director at Runners Need, explains:

“Exceptional service has always been at the heart of the Runners Need experience. By integrating Volumental's 3D foot scanning and Ochy's advanced gait analysis into one seamless journey, we're giving our customers access to one of the most comprehensive shoe fitting services available on the high street. This combination of expert colleague knowledge and innovative technology ensures every runner receives advice tailored specifically to them. We're proud of the strong partnerships we've built with Volumental and Ochy to bring this enhanced experience to life.”

From foot shape to movement

Traditionally, running shoe fitting has focused heavily on the physical characteristics of the foot.

Volumental’s 3D scanners measure key elements including:

  • Foot length
  • Width
  • Volume
  • Arch
  • Instep

These measurements help retailers understand the runner’s individual foot profile and identify shoes that provide the right fit.

But two runners with similar feet can move very differently.

This is where Ochy adds another layer of information.

Using an ordinary camera and computer vision technology, Ochy analyzes the runner in motion and provides insights into key biomechanical characteristics including stride length, foot strike and body alignment.

Rather than looking only at what the foot looks like, retailers can now also understand what the runner’s body does while moving.

Two technologies, one fitting

The entire experience is built around the Volumental app.

Retail staff first complete the shopper’s 3D foot scan using Volumental. From the same app and the same tablet, they can then launch Ochy’s gait analysis.

There is no need to create another shopper profile or switch between separate systems.

The shopper’s name, email and consent carry across the experience. Once the gait analysis is complete, Ochy’s findings are returned directly to the Volumental app.

Those findings can then be used alongside the runner’s foot profile to refine the shoe recommendation and identify models that suit both their foot shape and their running movement.

The result is one fitting journey and one recommendation.

Bringing two sides of the runner together

The partnership brings together two technologies that answer different parts of the same question.

Volumental focuses on the physical geometry of the foot, while Ochy adds insights into dynamic movement, gait and biomechanics.

Khaldon Evans, CEO of Ochy, explains:

“Partnering with Volumental brings together two technologies that answer different halves of the same question. Volumental captures the shape of the foot and is the system the fitting runs in, while Ochy provides deep insights into dynamic movement, gait and biomechanics. Both are powerful on their own and combining them produces one recommendation grounded in both. By pairing Volumental's foot shape analysis with Ochy's movement analysis, together we make sure runners get footwear that fits their physical foot profile and supports how their body moves.”

For the runner, this means a recommendation informed not only by the dimensions of their feet, but also by the way their body behaves in motion.

For retailers, it means access to more information without making the fitting experience more complicated.

Technology that works on the shop floor

Introducing new technology into a store only creates value if it can fit naturally into the retail experience.

With the Ochy and Volumental integration, staff do not need a second device, a second customer account or a separate fitting process.

Everything happens within the existing Volumental environment.

Alper Aydemir, CEO of Volumental, explains:

“We have never been in the business of hocus pocus. A scan has to end in a better shoe on a runner's foot, fewer returns and a store that sells with confidence, or it does not belong on the shop floor. Ochy holds itself to the same standard: real biomechanics, grounded in the science, turned into results a store can act on. Bringing their gait analysis into the Volumental app gives retailers more value from the fitting they already run, in the same flow, with nothing added for staff to manage. In Ochy we found a partner that thinks the way we do.”

This seamless workflow is central to the integration.

Staff scan the shopper using Volumental, launch Ochy’s gait analysis from the same tablet and receive the results within the same shopper record.

One fitting. One shopper journey. One result.

Helping retailers recommend with greater confidence

A running shoe recommendation should ultimately help a runner leave the store with footwear that fits their physical profile and supports the way they move.

By combining static foot measurements with dynamic gait analysis, retailers can build a more complete understanding of the runner before making that recommendation.

Technology does not replace the expertise of store staff. Instead, it gives them additional information they can use alongside their own experience and product knowledge.

The result is a more informed and personalized fitting conversation with every runner.

Now live across Runners Need stores in the UK

The integration is now live across Runners Need stores in the United Kingdom, enhancing the in-store fitting experience for runners and outdoor enthusiasts across the country.

It marks an important first step in the partnership between Ochy and Volumental.

The two companies plan to extend the integration to additional retail partners over the coming months.

Ochy and Volumental will also present the integration together at ISPO in Amsterdam from November 3–5, 2026.

Retailers already using Volumental who are interested in adding Ochy gait analysis to their fitting experience, or retailers looking to deploy both technologies, can contact the Volumental team at sales@volumental.com.

Bringing the complete runner into the fitting

A runner is more than the measurements of their feet.

By combining 3D foot scanning, running gait analysis and shoe recommendation within a single fitting experience, Ochy and Volumental are giving retailers a more complete view of the runner.

Foot shape explains how the foot is built.

Gait analysis helps explain how the runner moves.

Bringing both together helps stores turn those insights into one clear, personalized recommendation.

One fitting. One runner. One recommendation.
